We recently attend the Shrimp and Grits Festival in Jekyll Island. In conjunction with the festival on September 21, Jekyll Island released five sea turtle who had been rehabilitated by the Georgia Sea Turtle Center. The Georgia Sea Turtle Center opened in June 2007 and provides state-of-the-art emergency care to sick and injured sea turtles. Once the turtles are healthy, they are released back into the ocean.
We all gathered on the shore at Jekyll Island around 9a and the Jekyll Island Release Team released 5 turtles into the ocean. The turtles, Cedar, Stevie, Lil’Simon, Oz, and Pri, were a mix of Green Sea Turtles and Loggerheads. It was a very cool experience for an animal lover such as myself. One of the turtles had been in captivity for a year, while others had been there just a few months.
Godspeed Jekyll Island Sea Turtles!
Jekyll Island is gem—a world away from the hustle and bustle.
